My dad passed away March 25, 2011. This was an unexpected event, and something that was felt deeply by all of us, including my then-2-yr-old daughter. I felt the need to do a portrait of my father for my family members for Christmas of 2011. My dad was a character, and that was something I aimed to bring out in his portrait — the look on his face, his sports jacket, and three signifiers: his Christ head necklace, his watch, and his glass of soda (always had to be nearby and full).
