Frequently Asked Questions about Tyles

What are Tyles?

Tyles are cut vinyl appliques, created in the spirit of tile. Nic pulls inspiration from Moroccan and Persian tilework, Italian design, as well as everyday subject matter like food and drink. All patterns are hand drawn by Nic, and after the color stories are chosen, they are cut and arranged by her vinyl printer. So when you buy Tyles, you are buying a genuinely unique designer product.

Why buy Tyles over any other faux backsplash product?

Tyles is a completely temporary designer option for your backsplash or wall decor. Unlike other tile peel-and-stick solutions found in a lot of home improvement stores, Tyles are not faux. They are not trying to fool anyone. Tyles have the style of high-end wallpaper, and the spirit of a tile, with a much easier application. And because there is no background color or “grouting”, you can paint your wall whatever color you would like to coordinate with your Tyles purchase, giving you an infinite amount of design possibilities.

The sets of twelve 8″ tiles were put together for ease of application and flexibility of space. Whether it’s a full wall, a border, or a detail, Tyles are the perfect size to work with. Tyles can be easily removed, and will not do damage to your wall. It is the perfect solution for renters, home owners in-between renovations, retailers, or anyone who is just looking for a change in their space without a commitment.

Why does the price change depending on the design?

Tyles are made from cut vinyl. Each color needs to be cut separately, and then all colors and pieces are assembled together to form the design. Therefore, a set with four colors is more labor intensive to create than a set with one color, and more expensive.

Can I apply Tyles by myself?

Absolutely! The only required materials are painter’s tape (for placement), a plastic flat edge (a credit card will do), and a smooth clean surface on which to apply the Tyles. Of course, having a partner to help will always make things go faster (and possibly be more fun!), but it’s certainly not necessary.

Can Tyles work on any surface?

Tyles should be applied to a smooth, clean surface. Painted walls, glass, ceramic, and metal are all options. Unpainted sheet rock, cardboard, etc are not. It is also suggested by the vinyl manufacturer that walls are painted at least 2 weeks in advance of application, if not longer, so that the paint has the appropriate amount of time to cure.

Uneven walls, such as plaster, might be a bit difficult. It can be done, but it’s not easy. Painted sheet rock or smooth plaster are definitely best.

Each order of Tyles comes with a sample piece for you to try on your wall first, so that you know if the applique will work on your surface.

This is primarily a temporary backsplash product. Can Tyles be cleaned?

Yes. Simply avoid drenching them in liquid, or using too firm a hand. We recommend using a damp cloth, or a paper towel lightly sprayed with a simple soap and water solution, and then lightly wiping down the surface. And remember, if anything should happen to your Tyles, you can always buy replacements.

Can Tyles be used in a bathroom?

Yes! Tyles products will work well on a painted bathroom wall, or similar smooth surface. We have even tested this in our own very humid bathroom with no fan – the Tyles are still up!

How long do Tyles last?

As with any other product made from the same vinyl material, Tyles are made to last at least 3 years. With the right care, they can last much longer. Because we don’t make the material itself, however, this is not something we can guarantee. If you want more information on the material used, please contact us.

Can we order different colors than the ones listed?

Customized orders are an option, though they would incur an extra fee and take more time. Please let us know if you have a special request and we’ll see what we can do for you.

How excited are you to make Tyles?

Seriously, so excited.
